Self-Doubt and Low Self-Esteem Therapy in California
You’re capable. You’re accomplished. So why do you keep doubting yourself?
You know how to get things done, and others often count on you. But even with everything you’ve accomplished, you may still question your decisions, downplay your achievements, or wonder whether you’re good enough.
Therapy can help you understand what’s behind these patterns, develop greater self-trust, and feel more secure in who you are.
Online individual therapy for adults throughout California.
What if you didn’t have to keep proving yourself?
You don’t have to stop being ambitious, responsible, or motivated. Imagine pursuing your goals without constantly questioning whether you’re good enough or worrying about disappointing yourself or others.
You can learn to trust yourself without needing to get everything right.
Does This Sound Familiar?
You second-guess yourself. You think through a decision, make a choice, and then wonder if you got it wrong. Even when you know what you’re doing, you look to others for reassurance.
You replay conversations. After a meeting or interaction, you question what you said and how others perceived you. You may hesitate to speak up because you’re afraid of criticism or rejection.
Your accomplishments never feel like enough. You work hard and hold yourself to high standards, but instead of appreciating what you’ve achieved, you focus on what you could have done better.
You struggle with people-pleasing. You say yes when you want to say no, avoid disagreements, or put others’ needs ahead of your own. Setting boundaries can leave you feeling guilty or worried about disappointing someone.
On the outside, you may appear calm and in control. Inside, you’re exhausted from trying to meet expectations, avoid mistakes, and prove your worth.
Understanding What’s Keeping You Stuck
Self-doubt isn’t necessarily about lacking ability. Sometimes it’s connected to beliefs you’ve carried for years, such as:
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “I have to get everything right.”
- “I can’t let anyone down.”
- “If I make a mistake, people will think less of me.”
These beliefs can influence how you see yourself, make decisions, and respond to challenges, even when you know logically that they aren’t true.
Hi, I’m Kyrah Dickens, LMFT.
I help adults understand and work through the anxiety, self-doubt, and negative beliefs that affect how they see themselves. Together, we’ll explore what’s keeping these patterns going and work toward changing how you respond to them.
What Could Feel Different?
Imagine being able to:
- Make decisions without repeatedly questioning yourself or needing reassurance.
- Speak up, share your opinions, and express your needs even when you feel nervous.
- Recognize your accomplishments instead of immediately focusing on what you could have done better.
- Set boundaries without feeling responsible for everyone else’s reactions.
- Make mistakes without turning them into judgments about your worth.
The goal isn’t to eliminate every moment of self-doubt. It’s to help you feel more comfortable with yourself and make choices based on your values rather than fear of criticism, failure, or rejection.
How Therapy Can Help
You may already recognize that you’re too hard on yourself. But knowing that doesn’t always change how you feel or respond.
In therapy, we’ll work on understanding and changing the patterns that contribute to self-doubt and low self-esteem.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you identify and challenge self-critical thoughts, perfectionism, and negative beliefs while developing more balanced ways of thinking.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help address distressing experiences and negative beliefs associated with anxiety, self-doubt, low self-esteem, and feeling inadequate. EMDR isn’t limited to trauma treatment, and we’ll explore whether it’s appropriate for your needs.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps you respond differently to uncomfortable thoughts and feelings so they don’t have to determine your choices.
I tailor treatment to your experiences and goals, combining deeper emotional work with practical strategies you can use outside our sessions.
What It’s Like to Work With Me
I’m a psychotherapist with 14 years of clinical experience, certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
My therapy style is compassionate, collaborative, active, and direct. While having a space to feel heard and understood is important, I believe therapy should also help you make progress in your everyday life. I’ll actively engage in our conversations, offer thoughtful feedback, and help you develop strategies you can use beyond our sessions.
Questions You May Have
“What if I’ve struggled with low self-esteem for years?”
Longstanding patterns can change. We’ll explore what’s contributing to them and work on developing different ways of thinking, feeling, and responding.
“Will I have to talk about painful experiences?”
Not necessarily. Some clients want to address current anxiety, perfectionism, or people-pleasing. Others want to explore earlier experiences. We’ll focus on what’s relevant to your needs and goals.
When This Work May Be a Good Fit
Working together may be a good fit if you’re tired of second-guessing yourself, worrying about what others think, or feeling like your accomplishments are never enough.
You may be ready to explore the beliefs and patterns that keep you questioning yourself, learn to set boundaries without overwhelming guilt, and become more comfortable making decisions without constantly seeking reassurance.
You don’t have to be especially ambitious or high-achieving to benefit. What matters is how self-doubt or low self-esteem is affecting your life and what you’d like to change.
When This May Not Be the Best Fit
I provide outpatient online individual therapy for adults 18 and older throughout California.
Because therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all, some individuals may benefit from in-person services, specialized treatment, or a higher level of care. If you’re experiencing symptoms that require crisis intervention or more comprehensive clinical monitoring, a provider or treatment setting equipped to offer those services may be better suited to your needs.
My practice does not provide couples therapy, services for minors, primary addiction treatment, specialized eating disorder treatment, or court-ordered and custody-related services.
You Don’t Have to Keep Waiting
It’s easy to tell yourself you’ll address your self-doubt when life settles down or when you feel more prepared.
But you don’t have to wait until you’ve reached another goal or things become more difficult to begin working on how you feel about yourself.
Ready to Start Trusting Yourself More?
You deserve to recognize your worth without constantly feeling that you have to prove it.
Therapy can help you make decisions with less second-guessing, respond to yourself with less criticism, and feel more comfortable expressing your needs.
If you’re ready to explore what’s keeping you stuck, I’d welcome the opportunity to work with you.
